One of the first treatments our dentists may recommend after you are diagnosed with gum disease is a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing. This treatment works to remove harmful bacteria and plaque from your mouth, halting the progression of the disease so you can begin to regain your oral health.
What Is Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment which includes two main steps:
- Scaling – Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) from the tooth surfaces.
- Root Planing – Root planing involves cleaning the roots of the teeth, smoothing them to remove bacterial toxins.
Most scaling and root planing treatments can be completed comfortably without the use of anesthetic. However, an anesthetic is available should you wish to receive it. Your treatment may be split into several appointments, during which we will treat one section of your mouth at a time to ensure the best results for your oral health.
When Is Scaling & Root Planing Recommended?
The goal of scaling and root planing is to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar, and to halt the progress of periodontal disease. It is typically recommended in the milder stages of gum disease as it can be highly effective at this stage, especially when combined with other types of periodontal therapy, such as antibiotic treatments and improved oral hygiene routines at home.
